A TALE OF TWO CITIES
My research project is concerned with the development of western classical music in 20th century Shanghai and Hong Kong. By tracing the lives of musicians Mario Paci and Arrigo Foa, I investigate how art is developed through the collaboration of musicians and locals in a colonial metropolis. As a Hong Kong-born student who grew up with both Western and Eastern cultures, this project also helps me understand my own identity as a cross-cultured musician.

TANKA PEOPLE
In this ethnographic study of the "sea nomads" (Danjia) in Hainan, I treat folk songs as biological and cultural "memory codes." Using interdisciplinary methods—blending musicology, oral history, and social observation—I documented a vanishing way of life that exists outside the land-based mainstream. I analyzed how their vocal structures reflect their unique relationship with the sea and the precariousness of their modern survival. My goal was to decode how a community preserves its collective soul when its physical environment and traditional rhythms are threatened by rapid modernization.
